Press Release

11 August 2008
(Birmingham, UK) – The Egyptian daily newspaper ‘Algomhuria’ has been targeting the human rights advocate Dr Naguib Gobrael, the head of the Cairo based Egyptian Union for Human Rights Organisation (EUHRO).
The paper’s unparalleled venomous campaign against Dr Gobrael amounts to incitement of violence. Dr Gobrael is a staunch human rights advocate who challenged issues of citizenship and religious freedom of Egyptian Christians, in particular his criticism of Article two of Egypt’s constitution which differentiates between Egyptians on religious basis.
Al Azhar institution has confiscated a publication by the EUHRO ‘contempt of a heavenly religion’. The book defends Christianity, refuting the so many publications by Egypt’s Islamists writers.
The UK Copts association urges the president of the Supreme Press Council, Mr. Mohamed Safwat El Sherif, in his wisdom, to take the necessary punitive action against the Newspaper.
We urge as well the Grand Sheik of Al Azhar Mohammad Sayed Tantawi, in the spirit of free press to lift the ban on the EUHRO publication ‘contempt of a heavenly religion’. It does not attack any religion or faith, simply defends Christianity.
